Towny Guide

When you start playing the server, in general, it is a good idea to either make a town or join an existing town so you have your own place to set your valuables and have it be protected from griefing. If you build in the wilderness, it can be griefed. The exception to this are public roads and community farms. Griefing these is against server rules!

The server itself runs a slightly modified version of Towny, so if you are familiar with Towny there are so changes that should be made clear.

  1. Taxes are disabled. Your town will NOT be disbanded if you have no money, and people will not be removed if they do not have money. This applies to nations too.
  2. Town Outposts are still available; however, teleporting to them is not. This was disabled as it was abused in warfare between towns.
  3. During warfare if your town’s homeblock is captured, your town will NOT be deleted. Please read further for more information about Towny war.

Much like you can do /capital to teleport to your capital city, you can do /town spawn to teleport to your town.

You can do the following commands for an in-game Towny guide:

/towny ?

/town ?

Joining a Town

Just ask in chat. It’s really that easy.

Making a Town

Making a town on this server is not incredibly expensive like it is on other servers. In the beginning, you start with 5,000 Yuan. This is more than enough to create a one chunk town which costs only 500 Yuan. Here are the steps you want to follow:

  1. Find an area you want to live in. Since you can teleport to your capital city any time using /capital or /spawn, it’s a smart idea to live near a separate capital city so you have easy free access to two separate capitals and two markets. Do not be afraid to live in the dense forest, if you ask a moderator politely we will clear the trees away within your claims.
  2. Make sure your town is 5 chunks or more away from another town. You can not claim closer to another town. In order to check do the following command:

/towny map big

  • This brings up a chunk-map of the location with where you are standing in the center. Any chunks that are not a « - » symbol is a claimed chunk.
  1. Create your town and give it a name. You can pick any name that isn’t offensive or NSFW. It does not have to be Avatar related. To do so perform the following command:

/town new (name)

  • Do not include the parenthesis. For example, if you want a town called «Jtoxroxmysox», you would type «/town new Jtoxroxmysox»
  • Performing this command will create a town claim in the chunk you are standing. Permissions will automatically be set so only town members can build, destroy, and access chests. This chunk will be considered your «Homeblock’, i.e. the spot you spawn in when you do /town spawn.
  • You can rename your town at a later date with /town set name (name)
  • You can change the homeblock of your town at a later time by standing wherever you would like to spawn at and performing /town set homeblock .
  1. Now you can begin to expand your town. Doing so requires Yuans, the server currency. First, you want to deposit money from your balance (which you can check doing /balance). In order to do this, execute the following command:

/town deposit #

  • You can withdraw this money at any time. Only the mayor (you) has access to the town bank. Town assistants, VIPs, or helpers will not be able to do this.

/town withdraw #

  • Once you have money you can begin claiming land. It is helpful to have the chunk outlining tool in Minecraft enabled so you can see the chunk boundaries. Do this by hitting F3 + G. This may be different depending on your user settings and operating system. Claiming land will automatically set permissions in the chunk (or plot) to your default town permissions (all residents can build, destroy, access chests, people outside of your town can not.) In order to claim land, perform this command in chat:

/town claim

Benefits of Being in a Nation / Towny War

Initially, when you start your town, you will only have 8 available chunks to claim. You receive 8 chunks for each player. Joining a nation can increase the number of chunks you can claim by providing a bonus of 10 to 60 chunks depending on how many people are in the nation.

You will also be able to teleport to all towns in the nation. You can view your nation’s towns by doing:

/nation

If you join a large enough nation, you can very easily have dozens of teleports all over the map. It costs 5 Yuans to teleport, which is not much at all. You could easily make this back by selling a few stacks of dirt in the markets.

Being in a nation also brings the potential of warfare to your town. In order for a war to happen:

  1. Five people in both warring nations have to be online.
  2. In order for a town to be attacked, a town member must be online during the war. Towns with no online players cannot be attacked.
  3. Your nations must both set the opposing nation to enemies, you can see this by doing /nation.

In order to attack a town, you must place an oak fence (only oak) inside of a town’s border chunks (outer most chunks.) This will create a flag lasting for 60 seconds with a very noticeable indicator on it. Destroying the flag will stop the attack on that chunk and prevent that chunk from being attacked for the duration of the war.

If your towns chunk is captured it becomes the attacking town’s chunk. They can do whatever they want with it and it will remain theirs’ even after the war. You will have to resort to diplomacy to get the chunk back. If war is no longer possible, such as the attacking town leaving its nation, the chunk HAS to be returned. If they do not, contact staff.

Making and Joining a Nation

I will keep this section short as if you have made a town you will understand how to make a nation relatively easily. To bring up an in-game nation guide, do:

/nation ?

Making a nation requires there to be 50,000 Yuans in your town bank.

In order to join a nation, simply ask in chat.

Quick Explanation of Plot Permissions

There are two separate layers of permissions in your town. You have your town’s default permissions which are set to make it so only residents can do things in your town the second you create your town. Individual chunks that are claimed in your town are referred to as «plots.» Your town permissions are what every plot’s permissions are as well unless you select to change the plots permissions. Below is a quick explanation of what all the permission names do, you can see this by doing /town and looking next to «Permissions:«.

  • Build: This affects whether or not people can place blocks.
  • Destroy: This affects whether people can destroy blocks.
  • Switch: This affects whether or not people can access chests, open doors, use levers/buttons/pressure plates/etc.
  • Item: This affects whether people can use items such as buckets in your town.

Next to those, you will see «= r–». The first of the three is reserved for residents. If you see «r–» that means residents have permission to do something. The second slot is reserved for allies. If you see «ra-» that means residents AND allies can do something, while «-a-» means ONLY allies can do something. The last line is reserved for outsiders. Outsiders are anyone not inside your town. If you see «r-o» that means residents and outsiders can do something, or if you see «–o» that means only outsiders can do something. Allies are people from other towns in your nation.

You can see how to set these perms by doing:

/plot set perm ?

/town set perm ?

In order to set your entire town towns permissions at once, you do:

/town set perm

If you wanted to make it so your entire town has allies to have full permissions, you would type:

/town set perm ally on

If you wanted to make it so allies could only build in your town, you would do:

/town set perm ally build on

If you just want to make the perms for a specific plot (or chunk), you would need to stand in the chunk where you want the perms to change and replace the «town» in the above commands with «plot».

You can also assign various chunks to town members by making it so they can buy them. This will give them full control over their plot (or chunk) but ONLY in that chunk. To do this, type the following command:

/plot forsale #

The « # » is the yuan amount that they can buy the chunk for.

You can also name specific plots by doing,

/plot set name (name)

Adding People to Your Town; Assigning Roles

Adding people and assigning roles to people in your town is easy. In order to invite someone,

/town add (name)

This will send an invite to them. They must perform «/accept» in order to join.

There are three separate roles you can assign people. The first two being Helper and VIP. These are purely cosmetic, they do not have extra powers in your town. The second one does have slightly more power, this is the Assistant role. Assistants can:

  1. Add players from the town.
  2. Claim land but NOT unclaim land.
  3. Have permission in town chunks, even if the resident permissions are off.

Make sure you trust this person before making them an assistant. In order to do so, do:

/town rank add (name) assistant

You can remove it by doing:

/town rank remove (name) assistant

Final Notes

  • This is a very brief guide for Towny, I highly advise exploring the in-game towny guide and messing around with the permissions and various commands BEFORE you start adding people to your town.
  • If your entire town is inactive for 6 months, it can be deleted. It will not be automatically deleted; only if another player requests it to be removed. Assistants can request to take over a town if the mayor has become inactive, and Residents can do the same if both Assistants and the Mayor are inactive.
  • If you need help with anything regarding towny as this is clearly a lot of information to absorb, just ask in chat!
